Daphne, Alabama

Daphne is one of the most livable cities on Alabama's Gulf Coast. With about 33,800 residents, it sits on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay, just 20 minutes from downtown Mobile and about 30 minutes from the Gulf beaches. It is big enough to have everything you need, but small enough to still feel like a community.

What makes Daphne stand out is the balance. You get established neighborhoods with mature trees and real character, newer master-planned communities with modern amenities, and waterfront properties along Mobile Bay — all at price points that are more accessible than Fairhope or the beach communities. The cost of living runs about 5% below the national average, which is unusual for a coastal area.

Daphne is close to Spanish Fort (just to the north) and Fairhope (just to the south), giving you access to the entire Eastern Shore corridor. For people who work in Mobile but want to live somewhere with more space, better schools, and a coastal feel, Daphne is the sweet spot.

The city has grown significantly over the past decade while maintaining its character. The Barkley area has brought new restaurants, shops, and a walkable village center. One thing to know: Daphne is not on the Gulf beach. You will drive about 30 minutes to reach Gulf Shores or Orange Beach.
