September is here, and it is flat out the best month on the Alabama Gulf Coast. The summer crowds have thinned, the humidity has eased, the water is still in the low 80s, and the calendar is packed with the kind of events that make you glad you live here or that convince out-of-state buyers to make the move. I have been doing this since 2015, and I will say it again every year: if you want to see what the coast is really like, this is your month.

So whether you are a local looking for weekend plans, a buyer trying to time a visit, an investor watching the market, or a family relocating to Baldwin County, here is your down-to-earth rundown of what is happening from now through late September in Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, Foley, and Fairhope.

Free Live Music on the Beach: The Gulf Shores Sunset Series

This is the best free thing you can do on the coast all month. The City of Gulf Shores Sunset Series brings free live music to Gulf Place on September 3, 10, and 17, starting in the early evening as the sun drops toward the Gulf. Grab a blanket, pack a cooler, and park your family on the sand. No cover charge, no tickets, no stress. The Sunset Series is exactly the kind of thing locals mean when they tell you September beats July.

If you are relocating and want to feel the community vibe of Gulf Shores without fighting summer crowds, hit one of these nights. You will meet more real, everyday locals in an evening there than in a month online.

Labor Day Weekend: Fishing and OWA

Labor Day weekend kicks the month off strong. The MBGFC Labor Day Invitational fishing tournament runs September 3 through 6 out of the Gulf Coast marinas, which are always buzzing on a holiday weekend. Orange Beach is a working fishing town at heart, and the docks are the liveliest place to be.

Over in Foley, Stars Stripes & Summer Nights hits Downtown OWA on Friday, September 4, with live music, food, and that big community atmosphere OWA does so well. If you have been checking out Foley as a place to live, this is a great excuse to see downtown energy on a holiday weekend without the mayhem of the beach roads.

Fairhope End of Summer Makers Market: Sunday, September 6

The Mobile Bay End of Summer Makers Market lands in Fairhope on Sunday, September 6. Local vendors, handmade goods, live music, and that walkable Eastern Shore atmosphere the bluff is famous for. Fairhope's maker market scene is one of the best on the coast, and September is perfect strolling weather. If you are looking at Fairhope for relocation, this is a must-do on your visit list.

Blue Angels Practice: September 1, 15, and 22

The Blue Angels keep their practice schedule at NAS Pensacola on September 1, 15, and 22, and it is free and open to the public. September practices get smaller crowds than the summer ones and cooler weather on the flight line. If you missed them in July and August, this is your last good window of the season to watch the Air Force's demonstration team put on a show.

Bulls on the Beach at Flora-Bama: September 10-12

Professional bull riding on the beach at the Flora-Bama Lounge from September 10 through 12. I have said it before and I mean it: if you have never seen bull riding with the Gulf of Mexico as a backdrop, fix that this month. The Flora-Bama has been an "American Original" since the 1960s, and this is pure Gulf Coast energy. It gets busy for a reason, so plan on getting there early.

Coastal Triathlon: Saturday, September 12

The Brett Robinson Alabama Coastal Triathlon kicks off Saturday, September 12 at Gulf Shores Public Beach near The Hangout. Swim in the Gulf, bike the scenic coastal route, and run past white sand. Athletes come from all over the Southeast for this one. Even if you are not racing, come watch and see the coast from a completely different angle.

Walk This Way: 80s 5K and Block Party in Foley

The same Saturday, Foley hosts the Walk This Way: 80s 5K and Block Party at 5:00 PM on September 12 at 125 East Laurel Avenue in downtown Foley. Fun run through downtown followed by a block party with 80s music and food. Dust off the neon. This is the kind of small-town Baldwin County event that reminds you why so many families are moving here.

Mid-Month: MT Jones and the Fairhope Music Scene

Country artist MT Jones plays the OWA Theater in Foley on Wednesday, September 16. OWA Theater has quietly become one of the better mid-size venues on the coast, and it is worth catching a show there if you have not done it yet.

Later in the month, Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit play at Live at Five in Fairhope on Thursday, September 24. That one is already listed as sold out, which tells you everything about how far Fairhope's live music scene has come. Fairhope keeps punching above its weight, and getting an artist of Isbell's caliber into a smaller Eastern Shore venue is a big deal.

Freedom Fest Weekend: September 19-20 at The Wharf

The Orange Beach Freedom Fest takes over The Wharf Marina on September 19 and 20 with arts and crafts vendors, food, patriotic military displays, a Kids' Zone, and live music. It runs alongside the Bama Coast Cruisin' Fall Car Show, so you get classic cars and family fun in the same weekend. The weather in late September is about as close to perfect as the Gulf Coast gets. This is the event that marks the shift from summer into fall.

The Annual Alabama Coastal Cleanup also happens around the same weekend on September 19 across multiple beach locations. If you are new to the area, volunteering for the cleanup is one of the best ways to meet the kind of people who make this community special while giving back to the beaches we all love.

Gulf of America Jeep Fest: September 24-27 at The Hangout

A brand-new event for 2026. The Gulf of America Jeep Fest takes over The Hangout in Gulf Shores from September 24 through 27, with 50-plus vendors, trail rides, live music, and a ton of tricked-out Wranglers lined up on the beach. If you are a Jeep person or just like seeing a couple hundred custom rigs in one place, this is your weekend.

Gulf Coast Heavy Equipment Roadeo: Friday, September 25

This is something you do not see every day. The Gulf Coast Heavy Equipment Roadeo takes place at OWA Foley on Friday, September 25, where operators compete in skills challenges with excavators and loaders. It sounds unusual and it is, but it is also a genuinely fun community event that draws a crowd. Foley knows how to do unique events.

New Places to Eat Right Now

The coast keeps adding good spots, and a few are worth knowing about even if you have lived here all your life:

Half Shell Oyster House opened this summer in downtown Foley at 118 West Laurel Street, inside the historic Foley Bakery building. New Orleans-inspired oysters, gumbo, and Gulf seafood. It is the kind of anchor restaurant that tells you where Foley is headed.
Last Mango Bar & Chill at The Wharf, Jimmy Buffett-inspired waterfront dining in Orange Beach, a great pre-concert spot.
Barometer Waterfront Grille, waterfront dining north of Perdido Pass in Orange Beach, nominated for USA Today's Best New Restaurant.
Mediterranean Sandwich Shop, solid Mediterranean food in Orange Beach next to Cactus Cantina.
Paradise Pizza, now open in Gulf Shores. Sometimes you just need good pizza.
Bad Ass Coffee and Tap & Still, newer coffee and bar spots helping round out the Gulf Shores scene.

Development and News for Buyers, Sellers, and Investors

A few things happening on the development front are worth paying attention to, especially if you are thinking about Baldwin County real estate:

A new 121-acre industrial park is planned in Foley. Backed by a $3.3 million state SEEDS grant through the City of Foley and the Baldwin County Economic Development Alliance. That kind of industrial investment does not happen in a town that is not growing. Jobs follow, and jobs follow rooftops.
Phoenix South Point near Orange Beach continues to take shape, a roughly $350 million resort development with condos, waterfront villas, and restaurants.
Tanger Outlets Foley renovation is adding green space and expanded food and retail options. Retail investment follows population growth, and Foley is adding rooftops fast.
Gulf Shores new high school is set to open for the 2026-2027 school year. School quality matters for property values, and this is a major investment in Gulf Shores education.
Canal Road widening along the SR-180 corridor from Beaver Creek to the Beach Express Bridge is moving toward construction, which means more relief coming for the Foley-to-beach commute.
GoMESA funding delivered more than $52 million for coastal Baldwin outdoor and environmental projects announced in August, which keeps the region investing in the quality of life that draws people here.

If you are an out-of-state buyer or investor, here is the honest read: Baldwin County is still adding jobs, schools, retail, and housing, and fall is historically a great time to shop. There is less competition, sellers are more motivated, and you can visit during the best weather of the year to see what year-round life actually looks like.

Hurricane Season: The Quick Reminder

We are in the historical peak of hurricane season, which runs through mid-September. The tropics have been quiet, and forecasts point to a near-to-below-average season, but it only takes one storm to matter. Keep your insurance current, know your evacuation zone, and have a basic supply kit. And if you are buying, get insurance quotes before you make an offer. The difference between two similar homes a mile apart can be shocking. Trust me, pictures lie. An insurance quote tells you the truth.
